Sharing benefits and burdens in forest policy and REDD+
The EU REDD Facility shared its experience and insight on framing benefit-sharing in the Congo basin at a side event at the UN Climate Change Conference in Lima, Peru, on 9 December. Presenters shared preliminary results from studies of forest policies, multilevel governance practices and benefit-sharing arrangements in forestry and other sectors, based on experiences in Brazil, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Indonesia, Peru, the Republic of the Congo and globally.
Many lessons can be learnt for REDD+ from existing benefit-sharing arrangements. However, REDD+ requires moving from traditional compensation schemes to mechanisms that ensure equity, efficiency and effectiveness while building on existing approaches which have addressed community needs.
The event was organised by CIFOR, the Center for International Forest Research.
